5/26/2023 0 Comments Jim the Boy by Tony EarleyThese small, seemingly inconsequential incidents resonate for Jim for reasons that he is still too young to understand but that he sets about pondering just the same. We watch Jim as he learns to work in the fields, as he travels with his Uncle Al to see the Atlantic Ocean for the first time, as he befriends the "mountain boy" Penn Carson, as he throws a baseball beside a stalled train inside of which, he is told, sits the legendary Ty Cobb on his way to Atlanta. Instead of introducing some shattering conflict or disabling psychological trauma into the story, Earley simply presents a series of vignettes through which he stitches together a convincing and charming portrait of Jim's young life. That's about it, really, for the theme and plot of this novel.
